Highlights
-Thank-you for attending our winter concert.  Students should be proud of all of their hard work!

-In Math, we worked with tangrams.  We used a set amount of shapes (2 large triangles, 1 medium triangle, 2 small triangles, 1 square and 1 parallelogram) to create different pictures.  Tangrams develop problem solving skills and spatial awareness.

-In Science, we collected data from our class and Mrs. Snow’s class to make a graph.

-We finished the novel, Vacation Under the Volcano.

-Today we read with our grade 4 buddies for 30 minutes.  Students may record 30 minutes on their Read-A-Thon sheets for today.

Have a safe and enjoyable winter break!

Important Dates
School starts again on Tuesday, January 8th.

Homework
-For the month of December, please complete the Read-A-Thon tracking sheet for home reading.  Don’t forget that reading to your child also counts as minutes on the sheet and is very beneficial for reading development.  Students who return their Read-A-Thon tracking sheets in January get a treat from Cobbs bakery.

Ask me about:
Could you make a square out of all the tangram pieces?
What was our graph about in Science?  Was our graph the same as the graph from Mrs. Snow’s class?  Why?
What was the magic show about on Thursday?

Highlights
-In Math, we continued to work on strategies to add numbers in our heads (mental math).  We also learned about increasing patterns.
-In Language Arts, we read a non-fiction book about red foxes and made jot notes about what we learned.  Then we wrote about these animals in our journals.
-We started learning how to use a Word document on the computer.  Students wrote words which describe themselves and then typed these on the computer.  We are also learning to change the font and size of the words.
-It was DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) Day on Wednesday.

Here a link to Ms. Kreze’s music blog for students to practice their songs for the winter concert.

Highlights
In Social Studies, we came up with questions about life in past and present Iqaluit (e.g., What do they eat?  Is school the same in Iqaluit as in Calgary?  How does an Igloo stay up?  We watched short clips about throat singing, the Toonik Tyme Festival and how an Igloo is built.

In Language Arts, we continued to learn about features of non-fiction text.  This week we looked at how to use the Table of Contents and Glossary to help us with our reading.

In Math, we worked on the doubles plus or minus one strategy (also called the near doubles strategy).  For example, if I know 6+6=12, then 6+7=13 because it is one more.

In Science, we used eye droppers and experimented with dropping water onto wax paper.  We also predicted and tested how many drops of water would fit on a penny. (This is leading up to the concept of surface tension).
