Highlights
This week we have been busy researching Arctic animals and putting our findings into Google slides.

In Language Arts, we started to learn about how and why stories.  In February, author Cathy Beveridge will be working with us to create our own how and why type stories.

On Wednesday, we participated in a mobile escape room activity.  Students had to problem solve and work together to complete puzzles and challenges before a set time limit.

In Math, we have talked about different strategies for subtracting numbers.
1.      Count back.  8-2=  (start at 8 and count backwards 2)
2.      Count up.  12-9=  (start at 9 and count up to 12)
3.     Use knowledge of addition.  7+7=14, so 14-7=7

We read the novel “Hour of the Olympics.”

We finished our floor hockey unit in Gym class.

Important Information
Report cards go home on Monday, Jan. 28

Practice subtraction facts from 20.  (e.g., 9-2=   12-6=  10-3=)  What strategies can you use?

Highlights
(My apologies that the blog is being posted on Saturday instead of Friday.)

This week we learned about making jot notes for our Arctic animal research presentations in Social Studies.  Once we have collected our information, each student will make a Google Slides presentation of their findings.  We have started to experiment with some of the features of Google Slides like adding pictures, or changing the size and colour of text.

On Wednesday we have a mobile escape room coming as part of an in-school field trip.  Our class will have a turn from 11:55 am-1:25 pm.  Since this runs over the lunch hour, students will eat in the classroom earlier that day so we are able to participate.

In Science, we put 100 mL of water into 3 containers.  We covered one container and left the other 2 open to observe what will happen over the coming weeks.  These were some of our predictions: “The water will get old and dirty.”  “The water will get bubbles in it.”  “The water will get hot.”

In Math we are starting to work on subtraction strategies.  If students know their addition facts, this makes subtraction much easier.  (e.g., 3+7=10, so 10-7=3)

Notices about movie night were also sent home this week.

Highlights

Welcome back!

In Math, we learned about fact families and the relationship between addition and subtraction.  For example, the numbers 3,5,8 are a fact family because 3+5=8, 5+3=8, 8-3=5, and 8-5=3.

In Science, we recorded data in a chart after observing how different liquids look, smell, feel and pour.  We also learned how to measure liquids properly and we experimented with pouring and measuring water in different sized containers.

In Social Studies, we started to learn about some of the traditions of the Inuit people of Iqaluit.

In Language Arts, we brainstormed sensory words to describe a picture of a bird and snake and practiced writing descriptive sentences.

In Gym, we started our unit on floor hockey.
