Highlights
The grade 2 and kindergarten classes hosted our assembly this morning, which focused on Earth Day and living creatures.  Students should be proud of all their hard work and effort!

In Math, we wrote riddles about different 3-D objects (spheres, pyramids, cubes, rectangular prisms, cones, and cylinders).  We also sorted these objects based on different attributes (e.g., number of faces and vertices, whether the objects have curves, or if they can roll, stack, or slide).

We learned about the Great Pacific Garbage patch and why it is important to reduce, reuse and recycle.

In Science, we started our unit on Boats and Buoyancy.  We made predictions about what objects will sink or float.  Next week, we will begin testing some of our predictions.

Important Dates
Scholastic orders due May 6

Homework
Home reading-students are encouraged to pick and read “just right” books from the library or from home.  They may also continue to do Raz-Kids, or read the new home reading books, or the paper books from the school.

Practice addition and subtraction facts to 20.  What strategies can you use so you do not have to count with your fingers or use a number chart?

Ask me About:
How did you feel before, during and after the assembly?

Are you going to participate in the challenge from Frisbee Rob from April 29-May6?  (Students who fill out the chart and return it at the end of the challenge will have their name entered in a draw for prizes.)

Highlights
On Monday, we had a demonstration and a Frisbee lesson from “Frisbee Rob” (Rob McLeod).  He holds 6 Guinness World Records, 12 World Championships and the Canadian Distance Record.  He also gave us some challenges to reduce the amount of screen time (computers, TVs, Ipads, phones, etc.) that some children and adults have become reliant on:
1.     No screens in your bedroom (or when you are trying to go to sleep)
2.     No screen time during meals.  This is a time to connect with others and develop communication skills.
3.     No screen time 1 hour before bed.
4.     Try to limit the number of movies you watch to 1 per week.  (This still allows you to watch 52 movies in a year.)

He explained that screen time isn’t a bad thing, but the amount of time many of us spend with screens is hindering other skills from developing (face to face conversations, strength, endurance, coordination which we get from sports, music or other hobbies, creativity, self-regulation skills, etc.)

This week we have been learning about ways to care for our Earth.  We will present this information during our assembly this Friday.

We read the first 2 books in the Dragon Masters series by Tracey West.

In Math, we have been learning strategies to solve word problems.

Mr. Southworth introduced us to a coding program on the Ipads, which allow us to program robots to move.  We will continue to explore features of this program.

Important Information
We are very lucky to have colourful new home reading books.  Students will be able to take out a new book for home reading each week.  These books will be signed out to students at the end of each week and need to be returned the following week so that we can share amongst everyone in the class.  If the book becomes wrecked or is not returned, families will be asked to pay to replace the book so we have a collection for all to enjoy.  It is excellent fluency practice to read the same book multiple times.

Ms. Kreze has asked each student to bring a flashlight to practice for our assembly.  Please make sure the flashlight is labeled with your name.  Cheap, light flashlights can be found at Staples or the dollar store if you don’t have one.

Important Dates
No school on Monday for students.
Friday, April 26 at 10am- The grade 2 team will be hosting a school assembly.  Parents are welcome to attend.

There are 17 apples on a tree.  Some fall off.  Now there are 9 apples on the tree.  How many apples fell off?  (What strategies could you use to solve this problem?)
