Raz-Kids
The online reading program, Raz-Kids (www.kidsa-z.com) is now available for students to use.  Today we were shown how to access this program and an information sheet has been sent home for parents.  Students may use this program, or they may continue to read the paper books from the school, or their own books at home.

Scholastic
For a winter break gift, I have given each student a coupon for a free Scholastic book up to $6.  Students may fill out the name of their chosen book and the item number on the coupon and return it to me, or parents can enter the coupon code online.  Please note that the coupons cannot be applied to items greater than $6.  If your child wishes to save their coupon, they can claim it during future monthly book orders until June 2019.

Highlights
-Thank you for attending our parent-teacher conferences and for supporting your child with their learning!
-In Math, we worked on solving word problems with multiple solutions.  Here is an example of one of the problems:  Yesterday, I put some counters into groups with the same number in each group. I cannot remember the groups, but I can remember that there were twelve counters. What might the groups have been?
-We finished our cardboard community in Social Studies.  Students will be able to bring their projects home on Monday, along with their written description.
-We worked on editing a mixed-up message for capital letters at the start of sentences, punctuation and the correct spelling of “no excuse” words.
-In gym, we practiced staying in control when dribbling a basketball.

Homework
-Practice addition facts to 20.
-Please read and sign the home reading log
-Practice the spelling list provided at conferences

Ask me about:
What are you proud about in school related to your learning?  What do you want to improve?  What can you do to help you improve in this area?

Highlights
-We had our Scientists in School presentation Wednesday morning.  Thank you to our parent volunteers!  This was an introductory activity to our next Science unit on Liquids.
-In Math, we started to work on strategies to add numbers.  This week we practiced the “count on” strategy.  For example, when adding, 2+9, start at the larger number (9) and count 2 more.  This is more efficient than starting at 2 and counting 9 more.  We also practiced quickly recognizing numbers that add to 10.
-We set writing goals and typed them into Iris.
-Ms. Paull read us the story “Last Stop on Market Street” which deals with the virtues of service and kindness.
-We finished the novel “Midnight on the Moon”

Important Information
Please sign up for parent-teacher conferences next week if you haven’t already done so.  Thanks!

Homework
-Practice identifying the “ten friend” numbers (10+0, 1+9, 2+8, etc.)
-Please read and sign the home reading log
-Practice the spelling list provided at conferences

Important Dates
Nov. 22- Parent/teacher conferences in the evening
Nov. 23- Parent/teacher conferences in the morning

Ask me about:
What is the answer called when doing addition (Sum)
Is 5+2 the same answer as 2+5?  Why?
What are the 3 states of matter? (Solid, liquid, gas)
What goal did we finally achieve this week? (Everyone completed and signed their home reading!)
