Highlights
This week we wrote about what we learned about Terry Fox.  On Thursday we did our Terry Fox run during our gym time since it was snowing and raining!  In Math, we learned about changing different attributes in a pattern.  For example, we can change the size, shape, colour, position, thickness and number of objects when making patterns.  In Science, we made paperclips float using magnets.  This week we also started reading the novel, “Dinosaurs Before Dark.”

Homework
-Reading- Parents or older siblings- please sign the home reading sheet and return each day
-Practice the spelling list provided at conferences
-Practice skip counting by 2, 5 and 10 forwards and backwards (A 100 chart was sent home for students to refer to when practicing.  This chart can remain at home.)

Ask me about:
What city do you live in?  What province do we live in?  What country do we live in?
Do you remember what Alberta’s provincial flower is?  (Wild Rose)
What are some attributes you can change in a pattern?

Information
Students received their library books this week.  If they are finished reading their books, they may return the books to school on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and select new books.

Home Reading
On Monday our home reading program will begin.  A reading sheet will be sent home along with your child’s book.  Please write the title of the book and initial the sheet to indicate that the reading has been completed.  Students are welcome to read the books provided by the school, or they can read a “just right” library book or book from home.  To build student confidence, the books sent home for the first couple of weeks might seem easy.  Please encourage your child to practice reading these books fluently and use expression.

Terry Fox
This year we will once again be doing a Toonies for Terry fundraiser. Our school's goal is to raise $1200.  Please bring in a Toonie for Terry starting Monday, Sept 17 or you can donate online at www.terryfox.org

To donate online click the menu icon in the top right corner of the terryfox.org website, then click Donate today.  Then choose to 'donate to a student/school'.  You will need to type 'Panorama Hills' in the search bar and click on our school. All donations done electronically will also count towards our goal of $1200.
If students are able to collect additional pledges they are free to do so with parent/guardian permission and that would be terrific.  We will be collecting Toonies for Terry until our run day, which is Thurs. Sept. 27 at 1:00 PM.

Homework
-Reading
-Start practicing the spelling list provided at conferences
-Practice skip counting by 2, 5 and 10 forwards and backwards (a 100 chart will be sent home next week for students to refer to)

Ask me about:
How can you do a quick check to see if a book is a “just right” book?
Read one page in the book.  If there are more than 3 words that you can’t decode or understand, then the book is probably too hard.

Friday, Sept. 14, 2018

Thank you for reading our blog!  This year the Blog will be posted each Friday by 4pm.

Information
This week we had our library orientation.  Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we were not able to sign out books.  However, this coming Thursday, students will be able to bring library books home.

The deadline for Scholastic orders has been extended until Monday.  (If students handed in orders today, I will submit those orders tonight).

Home Folders
Please remove any items in the home folder each night and have your child return the home folder to school every day.

Meet the Teacher
Meet the teacher is next Thursday evening and Friday.  I am hoping to meet with all families during this time.  A school messenger will be sent out tonight around 6 pm with more information about how to sign up for a time slot.  Students are welcome to come with their parents, or parents can meet individually with the teacher.

What we are working on:

Language Arts
-Reading strategies to decode words
-Picking “just right books”
-We reviewed printing and have been working towards completing more independent writing

Math:  Creating, describing and extending patterns
We will be moving into number patterns and counting by 2, 5 and 10 to 100 both forwards and backwards

Science:  We have had some time to experiment with magnets and students have started to generate questions, which we will try to answer over the coming weeks.  (E.g., Why do 2 magnets sometimes stick together, while other times they seem push apart?)

Social Studies: Developing an understanding of our community, city, province and country

Monday, Sept. 10

(This was the information sent out via school messenger.  If you did not receive either an email or text with this information, please contact the school office.)

Dear parents,

Starting this Friday, our weekly class blog will be posted.  Please check the blog each Friday because it will contain important information about what we are learning, homework, and any upcoming field trips/special events.

How to find the blog:
1.     Go to the Panorama Hills School homepage
2.     Place cursor on the yellow words “Teaching and Learning.”  Move down and click on “Classes and Departments.”
3.     Click on “Ms. Bain”

I will aim to have the blog posted before 4 pm each Friday.  If there is any additional information that needs to go out during the week, a school messenger email or text will be sent.  If you have not received any messages from either the Principal or me, please contact the office (403-777-6061) so we can make sure that we have your correct email and information.

This Thursday we will have our first library time and students will be able to sign out books to take home.   Students are allowed to choose their library books and these books can be either read to the students by parents/older brothers and sisters, etc. or by the student.

Next week our home reading program will start.  It will be explained on this Friday’s blog.

Please return any Scholastic orders by Friday (cash, cheque, or online payment).

I look forward to another great week!  Please contact me at lcbain@cbe.ab.ca if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Lisa Bain
